Venezuela's Maduro & Wife Plead Not Guilty To U.S. Torture Charges

NEW YORK, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores pleaded not guilty on Thursday to a new US indictment accusing them of conspiring to torture political opponents. The additional charges, brought last Thursday, significantly expanded the US criminal case against Maduro, 63, and Flores, 70. They previously pleaded not guilty to charges that they abused their power to help drug traffickers ship cocaine. Maduro and Flores, captured by the US military in a January raid ordered by President Donald Trump and flown to New York, entered their pleas at an arraignment before US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan federal court. They wore tan prison garb and were shackled at the ankles during the hearing. When Hellerstein asked for his plea, Maduro said the accusations had been made previously and were false. "I have seen it in its entirety, Judge Hellerstein," Maduro said, referring to the indictment. "I reject this document in its entirety." The judge cut Maduro off as he spoke and said a plea of not guilty would be entered on his behalf. Flores said, "I am completely innocent. I am not guilty." Maduro and Flores are not accused of personally carrying out any acts of torture. They would each face a mandatory minimum sentence of 50 years in prison if convicted on all charges. Hellerstein postponed the trial start date by two weeks to June 14, 2027, due to the new charges. Prosecutors with the Manhattan US Attorney's office say Maduro directed Venezuelan officials to torture opposition politicians and military personnel accused of plotting against him to maintain power in the South American country. In one alleged incident described in the indictment, Maduro in 2014 directed officials to kidnap military personnel to draw information out of them about possible dissidents, and told officials to "squeeze them harder" when some remained defiant. Flores agreed with the plan in the meeting, and dismissed a suggested alternative plan to glean information by infiltrating the ranks, according to the indictment. Relations between Maduro, a socialist, and the United States were tense during his 13 years in power leading the oil-rich country. Successive US administrations imposed sanctions on top Venezuelan officials and key state companies, citing alleged human rights violations, corruption and election-rigging. Maduro accused the United States of seeking his ouster to gain greater control of the South American country's natural resources. The pressure campaign culminated in the January 3 raid, when the US military captured Maduro and Flores at their Caracas home and brought them to the United States to face drug trafficking charges announced that same day. Since then, they have been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Maduro's former vice president, Delcy Rodriguez, has led Venezuela since his capture and has ramped up cooperation with the United States. Trump has touted Maduro's capture and the reset of relations with Venezuela as a key foreign policy success heading into the November 3 midterm elections in which his fellow Republicans are fighting to retain control of Congress.

Trump Administration Seeks To Strip Ilhan Omar Of U.S. Citizenship And Deport Her

The Trump administration is reportedly investigating Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota in an effort to build a case that could lead to the revocation of her U.S. citizenship and eventual deportation. According to The Wall Street Journal, federal investigators are examining allegations of immigration fraud and false statements involving Omar and her family's immigration history. The investigation intensified Monday when agents from Homeland Security Investigations, a division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, searched Omar's Washington, D.C., residence under a court-authorized warrant. Investigators reportedly seized several personal items, including Omar's passport, cellphone, computers and notebooks. The Journal reports that investigators are examining whether Omar or her late father provided inaccurate information about her age on immigration documents decades ago. Authorities are reportedly investigating whether the information allowed Omar to obtain U.S. citizenship through her father when he became a naturalized citizen in 2000. Omar was born in Somalia and fled the country's civil war with her family. After spending several years in a refugee camp in Kenya, she arrived in the United States in 1995 and became a U.S. citizen in 2000. Federal investigators have also issued more than a dozen subpoenas, including to some of Omar's relatives, seeking testimony before a grand jury in Minnesota, according to the Journal. The allegations remain under investigation, and no court has determined that Omar committed immigration fraud. Omar has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and accused the Trump administration of using federal law enforcement to target political opponents. Her office called the investigation baseless and maintained that the congresswoman has done nothing wrong. The Washington Post reported that Homeland Security officials previously examined similar allegations during the Biden administration but did not pursue the matter because of insufficient evidence. President Trump has also denied directing the search, telling reporters Monday that the investigation was a matter for the Justice Department. The reported effort comes less than three weeks before the November 3 midterm elections, when Omar is seeking another term representing Minnesota's 5th Congressional District. Revoking a person's U.S. citizenship requires a legal process. As of Thursday, no denaturalization lawsuit against Omar had been publicly reported. The investigation remains ongoing, and federal authorities have not announced criminal charges against the congresswoman.

According to the Mesquite Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire around 12:07 a.m. on October 14 in the 2200 block of Amber Springs Drive. When officers arrived, they found two 18-year-old males lying in the roadway with gunshot wounds. Officers immediately began lifesaving efforts, including CPR, before both victims were transported to Baylor Hospital. Both teenagers later died from their injuries. A third victim, a 20-year-old man, arrived separately at a local emergency room with gunshot wounds. Investigators connected him to the same incident and said his injuries were not life-threatening. Mesquite Police Lt. Michael Kelly told FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth that the violence apparently began with an argument over a child's haircut. Six Flags Over Georgia To Reopen Friday Following Fatal Roller Coaster Fall

Six Flags Over Georgia is scheduled to reopen Friday, October 16, just four days after a man was killed and four others were injured in a roller coaster accident at the Atlanta-area amusement park. Authorities identified the victim as 42-year-old Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem of Atlanta, who died Monday afternoon after being ejected from the Goliath roller coaster. According to the Cobb County Police Department, preliminary witness and employee interviews indicate Kariem was thrown from the ride, struck other passengers and fell beneath the attraction. Emergency responders found Kariem unresponsive beneath the roller coaster. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Four other passengers, all juveniles, were injured and transported to area hospitals. Police said their injuries were not life-threatening. The Goliath roller coaster will remain closed indefinitely while investigators work to determine what caused the fatal incident. Park officials said there is currently no anticipated reopening date for the attraction. The Georgia Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire is conducting an investigation alongside Cobb County police. Investigators are examining the ride's restraint systems, maintenance records and other safety-related information. Following the incident, Six Flags temporarily closed nine additional roller coasters at six parks across North America as a precaution. The Goliath roller coaster, which opened in 2006, reaches a height of approximately 200 feet and speeds of up to 70 miles per hour. Kariem worked as an IT manager, technology teacher and robotics coach at Wesley International Academy in Atlanta, where he had served for more than 12 years. Family members said he was visiting the amusement park to celebrate his niece's birthday. Six Flags officials expressed condolences to Kariem's family and said the company is cooperating with authorities. The park is expected to resume its regular weekend operating schedule Friday, but the investigation into the deadly accident remains ongoing. Authorities have not announced an official cause.

Trump Highlights Republican Momentum Ahead Of Midterm Elections

President Donald Trump says enthusiasm among Republican voters is growing following campaign rallies in Arizona and Montana on Wednesday, as he continues traveling across the country ahead of November's midterm elections. Speaking to reporters after the rallies, Trump pointed to large crowds and strong attendance as signs of growing support for Republican candidates. "The crowds were massive," Trump said, claiming one rally broke an attendance record at its venue and attracted thousands of additional supporters outside. The president said he believes his campaign appearances are helping Republican candidates across the country, including Sen. Dan Sullivan in Alaska and Sen. Jon Husted in Ohio. Trump also highlighted his recent campaign schedule, saying he has visited approximately eight states and believes enthusiasm is spreading beyond the places where he has personally appeared. The president acknowledged the demanding nature of the rallies, noting that some supporters wait several days to attend and often encourage him to continue speaking even after lengthy appearances. His latest stops included Bullhead City, Arizona, where he campaigned for Republican gubernatorial nominee Andy Biggs, and Kalispell, Montana, where he supported congressional candidate Aaron Flint. Trump also addressed the ongoing conflict with Iran, predicting that it would end soon and lead to a significant decline in oil prices. "The Iran war will end very soon," Trump said, adding that Iran would not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. The president predicted that oil prices would fall sharply once the conflict ends, although he did not provide a specific timeline for ending the fighting. The November 3 midterm elections will determine control of Congress, with Republicans working to maintain their majorities in the House and Senate. Trump has made campaigning for Republican candidates a major focus in the final weeks before Election Day, urging supporters to turn out and vote even though his own name is not on the ballot.

Trump Says National Security Leakers Should Be Shot During Arizona Rally

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that individuals who leak sensitive military information should face severe punishment, including execution, during a campaign rally in Bullhead City, Arizona. The president made the remarks while discussing the disclosure of classified military information, particularly details involving U.S. operations against Iranian nuclear facilities. "In my opinion, leakers should be shot," Trump told supporters, adding that individuals who reveal the timing of military attacks could put American service members and national security at risk. Trump appeared to reference Operation Midnight Hammer, the June 2025 U.S. military operation targeting Iranian nuclear facilities. The president claimed someone disclosed the departure and arrival times of American military aircraft before the operation, including details about bombers departing from Missouri. He said the information was reported by The New York Times and CNN and claimed the disclosure forced him to reconsider the timing of the mission. Trump also described those responsible for leaking sensitive information as the "scum of the earth" and argued they should be punished severely. The president did not publicly identify the alleged leaker or provide evidence establishing that the reported disclosures forced changes to the military operation. During his remarks, Trump also criticized members of the news media, accusing some journalists of spreading false information. The comments came as Trump campaigned for Republican gubernatorial nominee Andy Biggs and other GOP candidates ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. The Trump administration has previously pursued measures aimed at preventing unauthorized disclosures of government information, including tighter restrictions on federal employees. Trump's latest remarks renewed attention to the administration's approach to national security leaks and the distinction between unauthorized disclosures of classified information and legally protected whistleblowing.

Pentagon Reportedly Considers Using 'Mother Of All Bombs' Against Iran

The U.S. military is reportedly considering using its largest non-nuclear bomb in potential strikes against Iran as the Trump administration evaluates additional military options in the ongoing conflict. According to CNN, Pentagon officials have developed new strike plans that could include deploying the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb, commonly known as the "Mother of All Bombs," or MOAB. The plans reportedly include potential strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities if President Donald Trump authorizes renewed combat operations. Among the possible targets is Pickaxe Mountain, a suspected Iranian nuclear facility believed to be protected by thick layers of rock. The MOAB weighs approximately 21,600 pounds and is designed to produce an enormous explosion across a wide area. However, military officials have reportedly raised questions about whether the weapon could effectively destroy facilities located deep underground. The bomb was first used in combat in April 2017, during Trump's first term, when U.S. forces targeted an ISIS tunnel complex in Afghanistan. Its potential deployment against Iran would represent a significant escalation in the conflict, although no final decision has been announced. CNN reports that some officials have also expressed concerns about the possibility of civilian casualties, particularly if the weapon were used near populated areas or critical infrastructure. The White House declined to discuss specific military plans but reiterated that President Trump is keeping his options open to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. The Pentagon also emphasized that military planners routinely prepare for a range of possible operations. The reported discussions come as Trump continues predicting that the conflict with Iran will end soon, while maintaining that Tehran will not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon. For now, the possible use of the MOAB remains a contingency plan, with no confirmed authorization for a strike.
